Congratulations to the New Zealand Sports Industry Association (NZSIA), winner of the September monthly NZRFC members prize.

The NZSIA will recieve a personally signed copy of Al Brown‘s recipe book ‘Go Fish’, an annual membership to Fishing Coast to Coast Magazine and a ‘Spot X’ publication for his area.

Here’s what Jay Marshall from the NZSIA said when he learned the NZSIA had won the monthly prize draw:
“The NZSIA has become a member of the NZRFC as we believe the NZRFC has done a lot for recreational fishers in the past and will continue to in the future. The average fisher is often not aware of the work done by NZRFC most of which is on a voluntary basis. Funds are what are most needed and the membership fee paid by NZSIA will be well spent by them. I believe one of the objectives of the NZSIA should be to encourage all of our members to join and also promote the NZRFC though our retail shops..”

Congratulations to Bill Walsh, winner of the July monthly NZRFC members prize.

Bill will recieve a personally signed copy of Al Brown‘s recipe book ‘Go Fish’, an annual membership to Fishing Coast to Coast Magazine and a ‘Spot X’ publication for his area.

Here’s the message recieved from Bill when he learned he had won his prize:

My interest in the NZRFC has been a relatively long one as I have been affiliated to the NZACA through my club membership. Through the committee work for the club, including a four year term as club president, I get copies of correspondence relating to recreational fishing events and issues. The NZRFC features strongly in this and I have been impressed with what the NZRFC stands for and what it is trying to do for the recreational fishers thoughout our beautiful country. By joining the NZRFC as an individual member I hope that my subscription will, in some small way, help the association in what it is working for.

Congratulations to George Shaw, winner of the June monthly NZRFC members prize. He is pictured here with his pride and joy Pearly Shells.

George will recieve a personally signed copy of Al Brown‘s recipe book ‘Go Fish’, an annual membership to Fishing Coast to Coast Magazine and a ‘Spot X’ publication for his area.

Here’s the message recieved from George when he learned he had won his prize:

My reason for joining NZRFC was to make a small financial contribution towards supporting those who are safeguarding the interests of recreational fishers like myself. Without the advocacy of the NZRFC I think the fishery would be divided between commercial interests and Maori, eventually leading to us having to pay the aforementioned parties for the right to catch a few fish if there are any left!

I am very pleased to report our conference and AGM held 1st & 2nd of July were great successes. With numbers attending up from previous years it is obvious the new direction is finding favour with the fishing public. NZRFC membership of most types is increasing and I see this trend accelerating following the interesting presentations made at the conference and ratification of our strategic plan at the AGM.

Reports on the conference can be found elsewhere on the site but the highlights were the commitment from our politicians to support reform and the outstanding contributions made by Len Olyott and Martin Salter. They both warned about being complacent and relying on central Government to protect our access to abundant fisheries. Their message was we need to step up and take control of our own destiny, set our own agendas, provide our own support and tell the decision makers just what we expect.

It is not hard to find fault with the present management and allocation systems run buy the Government where something in excess of 95% of all sustainable fishing allowances are allocated to commercial interests. These figures speak for themselves and we at the NZRFC don’t accept they are either fair or reasonable. Don’t be fooled by those who claim everything is ok and the Government will look after us because history proves they won’t!
The NZRFC is the only national organisation with open membership catering for anyone from individuals to national groups and has a fully democratic structure with financial accountability. We stand on our record of real achievements gained over the last three decades and look forward to your support as we seek to strengthen your representation.

We believe this can best be achieved by seeking an organisation with statutory recognition giving it the ability to report directly to Government not having either its agenda or advice watered down by ministry bureaucracy.

Geoff

The New Zealand Recreational Fishing Council is committed to Fostering Change towards a better future for all who fish for food or fun in New Zealand. Fostering change means opening up dialogue and getting information and views from as many people, organisations and jurisdictions as possible. After all, decisions to be made on the future of recreational fishing in New Zealand will rely on the weight of evidence for change, so it makes sense to get the best information available nationally and internationally.

Therefore, the Council is grabbing the opportunity to attend the 6th World Recreational Fishing Conference (WRFC) to be held in August, 1-4, 2011 at the Humboldt-University in Berlin (Germany). By learning from the world’s best practices and networking with fishers and experts internationally, the Council can contribute the best available information to discussions on the future of New Zealand recreational fishing.

Globalisation and international networking are two tools to assisting Kiwis find the best pathway for a better recreational fishing future. The theme of the WRFC is Towards Resilient Recreational Fisheries and it is the only conference of its kind in the world that is wholly focused on recreational fishing issues. It thus will be examining issues of recreational fishing that we in NZ only scratch the surface on.

At this point of Fostering Change in the recreational fisheries sector, it is timely to be able to learn off international experience and shortcut the journey to a better future. Participants from New Zealand and Australia have attended previous WRF conferences and have remarked on the invaluable experience gained.

As Martin Salter said in his recent comprehensive report Keep Australia Fishing,

“Currently there is too much of a culture of reaction, complaint and protest rather than working jointly towards a shared vision on a common policy.” The Council is wholly focused on positively fostering a process that engages Kiwi fishers to design their preferred future.

It is time for Kiwi fishers to step up to stewardship to ensure ongoing access to abundant fisheries into the future. The question is how can we best give effect to our recreational fishing rights and undertake our responsibilities for stewardship of the resources we hold so dear. The answer is held collectively by us all and we have an individual responsibility to put our ideas forward.
